Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Trap
Dr. Vance stepped smoothly out of the deep shadows, completely flanked by four massive, heavily armed mercenaries holding high-powered assault rifles.
He was dressed impeccably in a dry, highly expensive trench coat, looking entirely and absurdly out of place in the filthy, abandoned subway station.
Clara instinctively stepped directly in front of Leo, bravely using her own fragile body to actively shield the boy from the towering mercenaries.
Dr. Vance chuckled softly at the incredibly pathetic display of childhood bravery, rhythmically tapping his silver-tipped wooden cane against the cold concrete.
He loudly commanded his men to firmly secure the boy, explicitly and strictly ordering them to be incredibly careful not to damage his highly valuable neural cortex.
Leo gently pushed Clara aside and stepped forward willingly, slowly raising his bare hands in a clear gesture of absolute, undeniable surrender.
He calmly told Dr. Vance that he would happily go back to the torturous lab, firmly provided that Clara was immediately allowed to return to her father.
Dr. Vance smiled thinly, openly praising the young boy for his incredibly noble sacrifice but ultimately, cruelly declining the generous offer.
He happily explained that the highly anticipated final phase of the project completely required both unique subjects to be physically present in the synchronization chamber.
Once the final, permanent transfer was successfully complete, Clara's human brain would be completely overwritten, effectively turning her into a mindless, empty shell.
Clara screamed loudly and lunged desperately at the evil doctor, but her incredibly weak legs finally gave out, sending her crashing painfully to the hard ground.
Two massive mercenaries immediately violently grabbed Leo, aggressively wrestling him against the brick wall and snapping heavy, cold metal cuffs onto his thin wrists.
Another ruthless mercenary violently yanked Clara up by her wet hair, completely ignoring her desperate, agonizing cries for any kind of help.
They forcefully dragged the two terrified teenagers much deeper into the sprawling subway tunnels, moving far away from the prying eyes of the oblivious city above.
After walking for several exhausting miles in absolute, suffocating darkness, they finally arrived at a massive, hidden steel blast door built directly into the tunnel wall.
Dr. Vance proudly scanned his eye on a biometric reader, and the heavy steel doors groaned loudly open to reveal a brilliantly lit, impossibly high-tech underground laboratory.
Dozens of scientists in pristine, spotless white coats scurried frantically around complex, glowing machinery, completely ignoring the kidnapped children being aggressively dragged inside.
Clara looked around in absolute, unadulterated horror, finally realizing this massive nightmare facility had been operating entirely undetected right beneath her beloved city the entire time.
They were forcefully pushed into a completely sterile, blindingly white room containing two terrifying medical chairs equipped with heavy leather straps and thick, glowing restraints.
Dr. Vance excitedly instructed the nervous technicians to strap them securely in and immediately initiate the core synchronization sequence at absolute maximum power.
Leo looked over at Clara, his dark, incredibly deep eyes conveying a desperate, silent apology for utterly failing to protect her from this terrible fate.
As the massive machines powered up with a terrifying, deafening hum, the main computer console in the room suddenly flashed a bright, blinding crimson red.
A blaring, deafening alarm echoed violently through the entire room, and a panicked technician screamed that a totally unauthorized, high-level override code had just been entered.

The primary, heavily reinforced blast doors began to slowly seal shut, effectively trapping Dr. Vance and his armed men completely inside the chamber with their helpless prisoners.
"Someone on the surface just locked us all in, and they just successfully activated the facility's master self-destruct protocol," the utterly terrified technician announced.
