Chapter 1 - The Impossible Step

"Because she asked me to come," the barefoot boy whispered, his voice barely audible over the gasps of the wealthy crowd.
The ballroom remained completely silent, entirely captivated by the impossible miracle unfolding under the glowing golden chandeliers.
Clara stood trembling, her delicate fingers tightly gripping the calloused, dirty hands of the unknown boy.
The boy smiled softly, his eyes reflecting a profound understanding that defied his rugged, impoverished appearance.
He did not look like he belonged among the expensive silk gowns and tailored tuxedos of the elite gathering.
Yet, he was the only one who had managed to do what the absolute finest doctors in the world could not.
Clara took a hesitant step forward, her pink dress shifting gracefully around her weak, unsteady knees.
Tears streamed rapidly down Arthur's face as he watched his beloved daughter move independently for the first time in five years.
The wealthy guests murmured in absolute disbelief, entirely unable to comprehend the medical miracle unfolding right in front of them.
Suddenly, the grand mahogany doors burst open, and a dozen armed security guards flooded violently into the luxurious room.
Their heavy black boots stomped aggressively against the polished marble floor, instantly shattering the magical tranquility of the moment.
The captain of the guard raised his radio, barking harsh orders to secure the perimeter and apprehend the dangerous intruder.
Arthur snapped out of his emotional shock and violently waved his hands high in the air.
He explicitly ordered the guards to stand down immediately, absolutely terrified that any sudden, loud movement might cause Clara to fall.
The boy looked at the rapidly approaching guards with a strange, deeply melancholic resignation in his dark eyes.
He gently released Clara's hands, making completely sure she was perfectly balanced on her own two feet before stepping away.
"I kept my promise," the boy whispered, his voice barely a breath against the chaotic noise of the room.
Without any warning, the boy's eyes rolled into the back of his head, and his bruised knees violently buckled.
He collapsed heavily onto the cold floor, his small frame looking even more frail and fragile than before.
Arthur lunged forward with incredible speed, catching Clara securely in his strong arms before she could panic and fall.
He furiously yelled for the on-site private paramedics to immediately attend to his daughter and the mysterious stranger.
Two massive guards roughly grabbed the boy by his thin arms, ruthlessly dragging his limp body away from the center of the room.
As they aggressively pulled him, the oversized, torn sleeve of his dirty shirt slid up his right arm.
Arthur's heart completely stopped beating in his chest as he stared at the boy's exposed skin.
There, branded deeply and permanently into the boy's forearm, was a highly specific, complex barcode.

It was accompanied by the unmistakable corporate logo of Apex Industries, the shady biotech firm Arthur had supposedly destroyed a decade ago.
Beneath the dark barcode, a glowing blue sequence of numbers began to violently flash.
