Chapter 9 - The Hard Reality

The first few months were brutal for David.

He managed to get a job working as a shift manager at a hardware store. It was a massive fall from grace for a man who used to wear Italian suits and drive a Range Rover. Now, he wore a polyester polo shirt and rode the bus at 5:00 AM.

He learned the harsh reality of living paycheck to paycheck. He learned what it meant to budget for groceries, to wince when the electricity bill arrived, and to be exhausted after an honest day's physical labor.

I didn't intervene. I watched from a distance. I had private investigators do periodic checks to ensure he wasn't starving, but I never sent a dime.

Slowly, the changes started to show. He called me on my birthday, not to ask for anything, but just to wish me well. When he came over for Thanksgiving, he didn't arrive expecting to be waited on. He brought a store-bought pie he had saved up for, and he stayed after dinner to wash the dishes by hand.

The arrogance was gone. In its place, a quiet, humble resilience was beginning to form.

Meanwhile, society gossip revealed that Chloe had tried to latch onto an older, wealthy real estate developer, only to be dumped unceremoniously when her family's bankruptcy went public. She had moved back into her parents' downsized townhouse, miserable and bitter.
