Chapter 7 - The Crawl Back

It took exactly fourteen days for David to hit absolute rock bottom.

I was back in the lake house, reading a novel by the fireplace, when the doorbell rang. I opened it to find David standing on the porch in the freezing rain. He had walked three miles from the nearest bus stop. His clothes were soaked, and he looked thinner, exhausted, and utterly defeated.

"Mom," he choked out, his voice cracking.

I stood in the doorway, my posture rigid. I didn't invite him in.

"Chloe left me," he sobbed, tears mixing with the rain on his face. "She took everything. The wedding is off. I'm being evicted on Friday. I have twelve dollars in my checking account."

He fell to his knees on the wet porch.

"I'm sorry. I am so, so sorry. I was blind. I was arrogant. I treated you terribly, and I let her disrespect you in your own home. Please, Mom. Please help me."

I looked down at the boy I had raised. It broke my heart to see him like this, but I knew that if I bailed him out now, he would never learn. The entitlement would simply grow back like a weed.

"Get up, David," I said quietly.

He stood, shivering, looking at me with desperate hope.

"You can come in and dry off. You can have a hot meal. But you are not moving back into this house, and you are not getting your trust fund back."
