The fake pregnancy was the breaking point for David.

"You lied about a baby?" David yelled. "To my mother's lawyers?!"
"I was trying to save our lifestyle, you idiot!" Chloe screamed back, throwing a glass vase against the wall. "You couldn't handle your own mother, so I had to step in! I didn't sign up to marry a broke loser who works a normal nine-to-five!"
"You signed up to marry ME!"
"I signed up to marry the Vance fortune!" Chloe spat, her face twisted in disgust. "And since you don't have it anymore, this wedding is off. I'm not spending my youth struggling with a man who couldn't even secure a house."

David was left sitting alone on the floor of a half-empty apartment he was about to be evicted from, utterly and completely ruined.
