Chapter 1 - The Reality Check

"Mom, what is happening?!" David’s voice crackled through the phone speaker, stripped of all the arrogance he had displayed in my foyer just four days ago. "The country club just canceled our reservation. My credit cards are declining. Even my checking account is frozen! Did you do this?"
I took a slow sip of my Earl Grey tea, looking out at the city skyline from my luxury hotel suite.
"I didn't do anything, David," I replied, my voice smooth and perfectly calm. "I merely stopped doing everything."
"What are you talking about?!" he yelled, the panic vibrating in his throat. "The bank said my trust was pulled! My startup capital was flagged for withdrawal! You can't just take my money!"
"It was never your money, David," I stated flatly. "Your trust fund had a maturity clause dependent on my approval, which I legally revoked the moment you ordered me out of my own home. As for your 'startup capital,' that was a high-interest loan I co-signed and backed with my personal assets. Since you proved you are not a reliable investment, I withdrew my backing. The bank called in the loan."
"You... you pulled the plug on my whole life over a house?"
May you like
"No," I corrected him sharply. "I pulled the plug because you chose a woman’s greed over your mother’s dignity. You told me to leave. I left. I took my financial umbrella with me. Enjoy the rain, David."
I ended the call and blocked his number. The withdrawal protocol was absolute.
