Chapter 3 - The Public Execution

Victoria let out a loud, highly exaggerated sigh of relief, though her eyes glinted with malicious victory.

Well, it seems the camera system you boast about is just as unreliable as the staff you hire.

Julian stared at his wife, his sharp mind racing through a million different terrifying possibilities.

Maya scrambled to her feet, tears streaming freely down her pale, exhausted face.

Please, Mr. Vance, you have to know that I would never do something so completely foolish and cruel.

Julian did not look at Maya directly, keeping his intense focus fixed entirely on the blank screen of his phone.

The evidence found in your pocket is highly incriminating, Maya.

Victoria stepped forward, her voice dripping with venomous, unchecked authority.

Fire her right this second, Julian, or I will personally call my father's lawyers to have her sued into oblivion.

Julian slowly placed his phone back into his pocket, his expression entirely devoid of emotion.

You have exactly ten minutes to gather your personal belongings and leave my property, Maya.

Maya felt her heart shatter into a thousand irreparable pieces as the devastating words hung in the air.

She turned and ran blindly down the long hallway toward the servant quarters, sobbing uncontrollably.

Ten minutes later, she walked out the heavy iron gates of the estate, carrying a single, worn duffel bag.

The harsh California sun beat down on her as she trudged down the winding, palm-lined street with nowhere to go.

Suddenly, a massive, matte-black armored SUV screeched to a halt directly in front of her, blocking her path entirely.

The tinted rear window rolled down silently, revealing the incredibly serious face of Julian's personal head of security.

Get in the vehicle immediately, Maya, if you want to clear your name and stay alive.

Maya hesitated for a split second before grabbing her bag and sliding into the luxurious leather backseat.

Sitting in the dim light of the vehicle, waiting for her with a highly encrypted laptop on his lap, was Julian Vance.
