Chapter 9 - The Siege

Alex screamed his father's name in pure agony over the deafening roar of the helicopter.

He dove across the shattered glass and dragged the bleeding Don behind the heavy mahogany desk.

Nina crawled desperately across the ruined floor, ignoring the sharp glass cutting her knees.

She reached the older man and quickly assessed the terrible chest wound.

Without hesitation, she ripped the sleeve of her beautiful satin pajama top.

She pressed the wadded silk firmly against the bleeding hole to stop the hemorrhage.

Alex popped up from behind the desk and returned heavy fire at the hovering helicopter.

"We cannot hold them off with handguns!" Alex yelled desperately.

Nina noticed the glowing touchscreen panel built directly into the mahogany desk.

She remembered Alex mentioning the building's smart-defense protocols during orientation.

She smashed her bloody hand against the emergency lockdown button on the screen.

Thick, blast-proof steel plates immediately slid down over the shattered windows.

The heavy steel successfully blocked the helicopter's line of sight and stopped the relentless bullets.

The Don looked up at Nina, coughing weakly as he realized she was trying to save his life.

"Why are you helping me?" the old man wheezed painfully.

"Because I am not the monster you think I am," she replied firmly.

Alex quickly used the desk phone to order his loyal enforcers to secure the building.

A sudden, violent explosion rocked the hallway outside the penthouse.

The Romano mercenaries had landed on the roof and were blowing up the office door.

Alex handed Nina a loaded spare pistol from his ankle holster.

"I am completely out of ammunition, and I caught some shrapnel in my leg," he confessed weakly.

He slumped against the desk, his face terrifyingly pale from blood loss.

The heavy oak doors of the penthouse blew completely off their metal hinges.
