Chapter 7 - The Don's Decree

Alex stared at the glowing screen in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.
"My father thinks you are the one who stole the money," Alex whispered in horror.
"Sariah must have framed me to protect her own family," Nina realized instantly.
Alex furiously crushed the phone in his hand and threw it onto the train tracks.
"I will never let my family lay a single hand on you," he promised fiercely.
"If the Don wants me dead, there is nowhere left to hide," she cried in despair.
"We are not going to hide," Alex stated with a terrifyingly calm authority.
"We are going to break into the main Mancini corporate skyscraper."
Nina looked at him like he had completely lost his mind.
"The real physical ledger proving the Romanos did it is locked in my father's penthouse vault," he explained.
"If we get that book, we can prove your innocence and destroy Sariah's family permanently."
They navigated the remaining tunnels and emerged into the rainy Boston night.
Alex stole a parked sedan, hotwiring it with practiced efficiency.
They drove to the towering glass skyscraper that served as the Mancini syndicate headquarters.
Alex used his elite executive override codes to bypass the lobby security scanners.
They slipped into the private executive elevator and rode it silently to the top floor.
The penthouse office was completely dark and eerily quiet.
Alex walked straight to the massive steel vault hidden behind a fake bookshelf.
He entered a complicated numerical code and spun the heavy metal dial.
The vault hissed open, revealing stacks of cash and a single red leather ledger book.
Alex grabbed the book triumphantly and turned back to Nina.
Suddenly, the bright overhead lights in the luxurious office flickered on.

Sitting behind the massive mahogany desk was Don Mancini himself.
The older man was pointing a golden revolver directly at his son's chest.
