Chapter 9 - The New Normal

Six months passed.

The legal battles were entirely over. Liam had vanished from Seattle, reportedly moving back to the Midwest to live in his brother’s basement, working a minimum-wage job to pay off the massive legal debts he owed me. He was a ghost, entirely excised from our lives.

Life settled into a beautiful, peaceful rhythm.

It was Chloe’s seventh birthday. I wasn't going to miss this one.

I transformed the backyard into a massive carnival. There were bouncy castles, a cotton candy machine, and a professional magician. Jackson and the rest of my tactical unit attended, trading their combat gear for civilian clothes. These tough, battle-hardened operatives were sitting in tiny plastic chairs, letting Chloe and her school friends paint their faces with glitter.

“You look relaxed, Sarah,” Jackson said, walking over and handing me a lemonade.

“I am,” I smiled, watching Chloe chase a giant bubble across the grass. “For the first time in a long time, I actually am.”

Jackson nodded, looking out over the yard. “You did good. You protected your own. That’s all that matters.”

“Always,” I replied.

Chloe came running over, her face painted like a butterfly, wearing a bright yellow dress. She crashed into my legs, wrapping her arms tightly around my waist.

“Thank you for the best party ever, Mama!” she beamed.

“Anything for you, baby girl,” I said, kneeling down to kiss her forehead.
