Chapter 5 - The Mistress’s Secret

While Liam’s professional life was imploding, Monica’s luxurious facade was cracking.
She was stuck in a rundown motel room, her designer clothes smelling like stale cigarette smoke. Without Liam’s credit cards, she was completely cut off.
I decided it was time to introduce myself properly.
Leaving Chloe with my trusted unit medic—a giant of a man who would take a bullet before letting anyone near my daughter—I drove the rented SUV to the motel. I picked the lock to Room 114 in under ten seconds and stepped inside, pulling the door shut behind me.
Monica was sitting on the stained bedspread, frantically packing her Louis Vuitton duffel bag. She froze when she saw me.
“How did you get in here?!” she shrieked, backing against the wall. “I’m calling the cops!”
“Please do, Valerie,” I said, leaning against the doorframe.
The color instantly drained from her face. “What did you call me?”
“Valerie Cross,” I said, tossing a manila folder onto the bed. “Wanted in Nevada for defrauding an elderly man out of his pension. Wanted in Arizona for writing bad checks. Wanted in California for grand larceny.”
She stared at the folder, her hands shaking. “What do you want?”
“I want you to understand exactly who you messed with,” I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You put your hands on my child. In my world, people disappear for a lot less. But I’m going to do this the legal way. You are going to go to the deposition tomorrow. You are going to tell the truth about everything Liam did. And then, you’re going to turn yourself in.”

“And if I run?” she challenged, her eyes darting toward the window.
“Try it,” I smiled. “My team has tracking devices on everything you own. You wouldn't make it to the state line. See you tomorrow, Valerie.”
