Chapter 4 - The Legal Strike

Liam was standing in the lobby of his prestigious investment firm, screaming at a junior teller, when the process server found him.

I wasn't there, but Richard’s private investigator captured the entire exchange on video and sent it to me. Liam looked disheveled. His suit was wrinkled, and he hadn't shaved.

“Are you Liam Sterling?” a man in a windbreaker asked, stepping up to him.

“Yes! What do you want? I’m late for a board meeting!” Liam barked.

“You’ve been served.” The man slapped a thick stack of manila folders against Liam’s chest.

Liam scrambled to catch them, his eyes scanning the bold black lettering. PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE. EMERGENCY RESTRAINING ORDER. EMERGENCY CUSTODY INJUNCTION.

“She can’t do this!” Liam yelled, echoing through the marble lobby. Several of his colleagues, including the CEO of the firm, stopped to watch the meltdown.

The process server just tipped his hat. “There’s also a notice of civil litigation in there, Mr. Sterling. Your wife is suing you for embezzlement of marital funds.”

The CEO, a stern older man who prided himself on the firm’s spotless reputation, marched over. “Liam, what is going on here? Why are the police calling about your company car being impounded?”

“It’s a misunderstanding!” Liam pleaded, sweating profusely.

“Clear out your desk,” the CEO said coldly. “You’re on administrative leave until this circus is resolved. We do not tolerate public scandals.”

I watched the video from my couch, feeling a deep, satisfying warmth spread through my chest. The first domino had fallen.
