Chapter 8 - The Billionaire's Resources

Mara did not hesitate for a single second as she threw herself desperately into the passenger seat of the roaring sports car.

Edward slammed his foot heavily on the gas pedal, tearing out of the industrial alleyway just as the corrupted cops struggled to their feet.

"How did you possibly escape from your heavily guarded police cruiser?" Mara gasped, her hands still tightly cuffed behind her back.

"My personal lawyer intercepted the transport vehicle three blocks away with a heavily armed private security convoy," Edward explained casually.

He reached across the center console with a specialized lockpick tool and effortlessly popped the iron cuffs entirely off her wrists.

Mara rubbed her bruised skin, completely overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the billionaire's unlimited resources.

"Peter has completely bought off the police captain, which means we are officially highly dangerous, wanted fugitives," Mara warned him frantically.

"We are only fugitives until morning, because my elite legal team is currently securing a federal warrant to audit Peter's offshore accounts," Edward stated with absolute confidence.

He navigated the dark city streets with expert precision, expertly avoiding the main highways where police blockades would surely be waiting.

"Where exactly are we going?" Mara asked as the glowing city skyline slowly faded into the rearview mirror.

"We are going to my highly secure safe house in the mountains, where Peter cannot possibly find us before the federal agents finish their investigation," Edward replied.

The intense drive took nearly three hours, the silence in the car broken only by the soft, comforting hum of the powerful engine.

They finally arrived at a massive, ultra-modern glass and steel cabin hidden deep within a heavily forested private estate.

Edward parked the car in the underground garage and led Mara up the stairs into a beautifully furnished, wonderfully warm living room.

He immediately walked over to a massive liquor cabinet, poured two glasses of expensive amber whiskey, and handed one gently to Mara.

"Drink this, it will significantly help calm your nerves after almost being executed in an alleyway," Edward ordered gently.

Mara took a long sip, the fiery liquid burning pleasantly down her throat and finally stopping the violent shaking of her hands.

Edward sat down on the comfortable leather sofa beside her, his intense gray eyes filled with a terrifying, absolute protective warmth.

"I am so incredibly sorry that my accidental email dragged you into this deadly nightmare," Mara whispered guiltily.

"That email was the single best thing that has ever happened to me, Mara," Edward replied, his voice completely devoid of any hesitation.

He reached out, gently cupping her pale face in his hands, his thumb softly tracing the elegant curve of her cheek.

"I spent years sitting in a cold boardroom, completely isolated, until you crashed into my life and made me feel entirely alive again," he confessed fiercely.

He kissed her again, incredibly slower this time, a deep, incredibly passionate promise that he was never going to let her go.

Mara melted into his strong embrace, completely surrendering to the overwhelming, undeniable love she felt for the billionaire.

They spent the entire night curled up safely together on the sofa, finding peace in the absolute center of the terrifying storm raging around them.

When the morning sun finally broke beautifully over the mountain peaks, Edward’s secure satellite phone buzzed aggressively on the coffee table.

Edward answered it, putting the device directly on speakerphone so Mara could hear the update from his legal team.

"Mr. Hale, the federal agents successfully raided Peter's offshore accounts and found the stolen museum funds," the lawyer announced triumphantly.

Mara let out a massive sigh of profound relief, feeling the immense weight of the false accusations finally lifting off her shoulders.

"However, we have a massive, entirely unforeseen problem regarding the physical diamonds," the lawyer continued, his voice dropping ominously.

"What happened to the diamonds?" Edward demanded, his grip tightening entirely around Mara's hand.

"The police captain recovered the bag, but when the FBI opened it, they discovered it was absolutely not filled with fakes," the lawyer explained.

"The bag contained the authentic, priceless diamonds, which explicitly means Peter never actually intended to steal them," the lawyer concluded.

Mara felt a sudden, sickening jolt of terrifying realization as the true, horrifying purpose of the night's events finally clicked in her mind.

"The diamonds were just a massive, elaborate distraction," Mara whispered, her eyes widening in absolute terror.

"A distraction for what?" Edward asked, looking at her with deep, genuine confusion.

"While everyone was focused on the vault and the bomb, Peter’s men were actively raiding the secret administrative archives," Mara stated, her voice shaking violently.

"They did not want the diamonds, Edward, they wanted the highly confidential maps leading to your family's hidden historical estate."
