Chapter 10 - The Masterpiece

Mara felt her knees actively threaten to buckle as she stared helplessly at her terrified, sobbing roommate.

Peter had completely anticipated their every move, ruthlessly kidnapping Jess from the luxury hotel to use as the ultimate bargaining chip.

"Drop the weapon, Edward, or I will paint these priceless artifacts with the blood of Mara's best friend," Peter threatened with a sinister, terrifying smile.

Edward’s gray eyes burned with a terrifying, highly lethal rage, but he slowly lowered his gun and placed it gently on the stone floor.

"Let her go, Peter, she has absolutely nothing to do with this," Mara begged, stepping desperately in front of Edward to shield him.

"She is the only reason you are both going to stand completely quietly while my men load these bags onto my boat," Peter sneered, waving his gun aggressively toward the tunnel exit.

The mercenaries hauled the incredibly heavy canvas bags over their shoulders, keeping their weapons trained squarely on Edward and Mara.

Peter grabbed Jess tightly by her bound arms, violently dragging her toward the dark smuggler's tunnel to use as a human shield for his escape.

Mara looked frantically at Edward, desperately searching for any sign of a brilliant plan in his incredibly calm demeanor.

Edward simply offered her a microscopic, reassuring nod, his eyes completely focused on the dark ceiling of the cavernous basement.

Suddenly, the entire stone basement was plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness as the main power breaker was remotely cut from the outside.

Before Peter's men could even turn on their flashlights, the deafening sound of shattering glass echoed loudly from the high skylight directly above them.

A dozen elite, heavily armed tactical operators from Edward's private security firm descended flawlessly from the ceiling on fast-ropes.

The room erupted into absolute chaos as blinding stun grenades exploded with a terrifying, incredibly disorienting flash of bright white light.

Edward lunged forward fiercely in the blinding darkness, perfectly predicting Peter's exact, vulnerable position.

He tackled Peter forcefully to the hard stone floor, completely disarming him with a brutal, precisely calculated strike to the jaw.

Mara sprinted blindly toward the sound of her roommate's muffled cries, throwing herself heavily over Jess to shield her completely from the chaotic crossfire.

Within exactly sixty seconds, the intense skirmish was completely over, and the backup emergency lights finally flickered to life.

Peter and his mercenaries were all pinned securely to the ground, heavy zip-ties securing their wrists while Edward's security team secured the stolen artifacts.

Mara frantically untied the rough gag around Jess's mouth, pulling her best friend into a massive, tearful, and overwhelmingly relieved embrace.

Edward walked over, kneeling safely beside them on the cold stone floor, and gently wiped a streak of dirt from Mara's cheek.

"I told you I protect what absolutely belongs to me, and that explicitly includes the people you love," Edward whispered fiercely, pulling her into a passionate, breathtaking kiss.

Two hours later, federal agents stormed the island and officially took permanent custody of Peter Maddox and his corrupted accomplices.

The severe charges of kidnapping, grand larceny, and attempted murder guaranteed that Peter would spend the rest of his natural life rotting in a federal penitentiary.

Three months later, the dark, terrifying nightmare felt like a beautifully distant, completely faded memory.

Mara walked confidently through the grand, sunlit lobby of the Centennial Museum, completely ignoring the excited, whispering crowds.

She was no longer an invisible, entirely overlooked exhibition coordinator hiding nervously in a small cubicle.

Edward had officially promoted her to the prestigious position of Executive Curator, giving her complete, unchallenged authority over the museum's entire artistic direction.

She stepped happily into the private executive elevator and rode it to the top floor, her heart completely fluttering with happiness.

Edward was waiting for her behind his massive mahogany desk, smiling warmly as she walked into his arms for a long, incredibly romantic kiss.

They were officially a formidable, totally unstoppable team, both professionally and romantically, completely dominating the city's entire artistic landscape.

Later that afternoon, Mara went down to Peter's old office to finally clear out the very last of his abandoned, dusty files.

She moved a incredibly heavy filing cabinet away from the wall, entirely surprised to find a small, digital safe hidden directly behind the baseboard.

She requested the master override code from the security team, punching the numbers in and pulling the heavy steel door wide open.

Inside the safe was a single, securely sealed envelope addressed explicitly to Edward Hale in Peter's unmistakable, jagged handwriting.

Mara tore the thick envelope open, her blood instantly turning to absolute ice as she read the chilling, single sentence written on the page.

"The embezzlement was just a distraction to cover up the fact that your half-billion-dollar masterpiece in the main gallery is a flawless, recently swapped forgery."
