Chapter 5 - The Inside Man

Mara felt a sickening wave of absolute betrayal wash over her as she recognized the face of the corrupted security chief.

Marcus had worked at the Centennial Museum for nearly fifteen years, smiling and greeting her warmly every single morning.

Now, he was holding an assault rifle and actively helping Peter steal millions of dollars worth of rare diamonds.

Edward pulled Mara back into the shadows of the concrete hallway, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched visibly in his cheek.

"Marcus controls the entire surveillance grid, which explains exactly how Peter bypassed all the security checkpoints," Edward whispered furiously.

"It also explains how someone got into my apartment without breaking a single lock, because Marcus has copies of all employee keys," Mara realized with a violent shudder.

"We cannot simply walk in there and arrest them, because Marcus’s weapon gives them a massive tactical advantage," Edward analyzed the situation rapidly.

"There is a secondary emergency lockdown switch located safely in the curator's office just down the hall," Mara suggested quietly.

"If we activate it, the vault doors will automatically seal themselves, trapping them entirely inside until the police arrive," she explained.

Edward’s eyes lit up with fierce pride at her brilliant, incredibly quick thinking under such extreme pressure.

"Show me the way, but stay completely behind me at all times," Edward commanded, keeping his handgun raised and ready.

They backed away from the vault entrance and crept silently down the dark, carpeted corridor toward the administrative offices.

Mara pointed to a heavy oak door marked with a gold plaque, her hands trembling slightly as she reached for the brass handle.

She slowly turned the knob and pushed the door open, slipping inside the dark office with Edward right behind her.

The room smelled of old paper and dust, illuminated only by the faint glow of the streetlights filtering through a high security window.

Mara rushed behind the massive mahogany desk and dropped to her knees, feeling frantically beneath the wooden panels for the hidden red button.

"It has to be here, Peter showed it to me during my orientation exactly three years ago," Mara muttered desperately.

Her fingers finally brushed against a small, raised plastic square hidden carefully near the electrical outlets.

"I found it," Mara announced, pressing the button firmly into the wall.

A loud, mechanical klaxon immediately began blaring throughout the basement, followed by the grinding sound of heavy titanium gears shifting.

They heard the satisfying, thunderous boom of the massive vault doors slamming shut down the hallway.

"We did it," Mara sighed in relief, leaning back against the dusty floorboards.

Edward offered her his hand, pulling her effortlessly to her feet and pulling her into a sudden, fiercely protective embrace.

Mara rested her head against his chest, listening to the rapid, incredibly steady beating of his heart beneath his tuxedo shirt.

For a brief, beautifully suspended moment in the dark office, the terrifying chaos of the night completely faded away.

Edward slowly pulled back, his intense gray eyes locking onto hers, the undeniable chemistry between them practically crackling in the air.

He leaned down, his face mere inches from hers, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before returning directly to her eyes.

Before the inevitable kiss could happen, the heavy oak door of the office violently burst open.

Marcus stepped into the room, his assault rifle raised and a vicious, cruel sneer twisting his face.

He had managed to slip out of the vault just seconds before the titanium doors had fully sealed shut.

"Drop the gun, Mr. Hale, or I will blow a hole straight through your lovely date," Marcus ordered coldly.

Edward froze, his grip tightening protectively around Mara's waist as he calculated their rapidly dwindling odds of survival.

"You are a smart man, Marcus, you know you will never make it out of this building alive," Edward reasoned calmly.

Marcus laughed, a harsh, completely humorless sound that echoed terribly in the small office.

"I do not need to leave the building, because the explosives I planted in the lobby are set to detonate in exactly two minutes," Marcus revealed.
