Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

The heavy metal door groaned and swung inward, revealing Marcus standing in the dimly lit hallway.

He held a dark, heavy pistol in his right hand, a sickeningly calm smile plastered across his face.

"I told you I was coming in," he said smoothly, stepping over the shattered glass on the floor.

My body was screaming in agony from the blood loss, but pure, unfiltered adrenaline took over.

I didn't think about the gun or the sheer insanity of the situation.

I only thought about the tiny, fragile life hiding under the cabinets in the next room.

With a primal scream, I swung the heavy metal IV pole directly at Marcus's head.

He ducked at the last possible second, but the solid metal caught him hard across his left shoulder.

He grunted in pain, stumbling backward into the doorframe as the pistol slipped wildly in his grip.

Before he could regain his balance, I dropped the pole and tackled him violently around the waist.

We crashed into the hallway floor, a tangle of limbs and desperate, frantic violence.

My vision was swimming with dark spots, and my arms felt completely entirely numb.

Marcus was heavier and much stronger, easily flipping me onto my back and pinning my shoulders to the linoleum.

He raised the pistol, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against my forehead.

"You really shouldn't have interfered with my business, Ethan," he hissed, his eyes burning with lethal intent.

I stared up at him, my breathing ragged, knowing this was likely the very last moment of my life.

"You're never getting my son," I choked out, offering him a bloody, defiant smile.

Marcus narrowed his eyes, his finger tightening slowly around the heavy trigger.

Suddenly, a massive surge of electricity violently crackled through the air.

Marcus's body instantly went rigid, his eyes rolling back into his head as he let out a choked gasp.

He collapsed sideways off my chest, dropping the pistol onto the floor with a heavy clatter.

Standing directly behind him was the lead security guard from earlier, holding a deployed Taser gun.

"Code Silver resolved," the guard spoke breathlessly into his shoulder radio.

"Suspect is down and secured."

I laid on the floor, gasping for air as the dark edges of my vision finally closed in entirely.

The last thing I saw was the hospital lights flickering back on, illuminating the terrified faces of the surgical team through the glass.

The last thing I heard was the strong, steady rhythm of Sophie's heart monitor beeping in the distance.

Then, everything faded into total, peaceful darkness.

I woke up to the sound of soft, rhythmic breathing and the faint smell of sterile hospital sheets.

I slowly blinked my eyes open, groaning as a dull ache radiated from my bruised ribs.

I was lying in a comfortable hospital bed, sunlight streaming brightly through the window blinds.

I turned my head and felt my entire soul shatter in the most beautiful way possible.

Sitting in a chair beside my bed, looking exhausted but undeniably alive, was Sophie.

She was holding a tiny bundle wrapped in a blue and pink striped hospital blanket.

"Hey there, hero," she whispered, a radiant, tearful smile spreading across her beautiful face.
