Chapter 8 - The Lockdown

The automated warning repeated itself on a continuous, terrifying loop over the hospital PA system.
"Code Silver. Armed intruder in the cardiac wing. Initiate immediate lockdown."
Inside the operating room, the surgical team froze, their eyes darting nervously toward the reinforced metal doors.
The joy of Sophie's miraculous heartbeat was instantly replaced by a suffocating, paralyzing fear.
"Shut off the main lights!" the lead surgeon barked, immediately transitioning into emergency protocol.
The bright surgical lamps were killed, plunging the operating room into eerie shadows illuminated only by the glow of the monitors.
Through the observation glass, I watched the pediatric nurse grab my newborn son and huddle beneath the heavy metal medical supply cabinets.
I was locked in the tiny observation deck, still weakly connected to the humming ECMO machine.
The ICU nurse next to me pulled the needle from my arm, pressing a gauze pad hard against the bleeding puncture wound.
"We have to get away from the glass," she whispered frantically, pulling me toward the darkest corner of the small room.
My legs felt like lead, my body completely drained from the massive blood loss I had just endured.
I slumped against the cold cinderblock wall, my heart hammering violently against my bruised ribs.
Through the thick glass window, I could see the silhouette of the surgical team standing perfectly still around Sophie's vulnerable body.
Her heart was finally beating on its own, but she was entirely defenseless in the dark.
Suddenly, heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed down the main corridor outside the surgical suite.
Someone was walking slowly, methodically checking the handles of every single door in the hallway.
My breath caught in my throat as the shadow of a tall figure paused right outside our observation room.
The doorknob rattled violently.
When it didn't open, a loud, metallic bang echoed against the reinforced wood.
"Open the damn door, Ethan," a voice muffled by the heavy door demanded.
My blood ran completely cold as I instantly recognized the sinister, arrogant tone.
It was Marcus Vance.
The black-market broker had somehow escaped hospital security and found his way back up to the surgical wing.
"I know you're in there," Marcus taunted, banging a heavy object against the glass panel embedded in the door.
"You really thought a couple of rent-a-cops could keep me from collecting my merchandise?"
He wasn't here for revenge.
He was here for the baby.
"If you don't unlock this door, I am going to shoot the glass out," Marcus warned, his voice dangerously calm.
I looked at the ICU nurse, who was trembling uncontrollably with her hands clamped tightly over her mouth.
I couldn't let him get into this room.
If he breached the observation deck, he would have direct access to the interior door that led straight into the operating theater where my son was hiding.
I forced my exhausted, bleeding body off the floor, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole from the corner of the room.
"Stay down," I mouthed to the nurse, gripping the metal pole like a baseball bat.
Just as I stepped in front of the door to barricade it, a deafening gunshot shattered the heavy silence.
May you like
Spiderweb cracks exploded across the reinforced glass panel right in front of my face.
Before I could even react, a second gunshot completely blew the door handle off its hinges.
