Chapter 1 - The Devastating Truth

Her trembling fingers traced the edge of the plastic hospital bracelet.
I watched a single tear escape her hollow eyes and slide down her pale cheek.
"I didn't want you to find out like this," she whispered, her voice barely a breath.
I took a step closer, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Find out what, Sophie?" I asked, my voice cracking under the weight of the heavy silence.
She slowly pulled back the thin hospital blanket that had been covering her lap.
Underneath the fabric, her stomach was unmistakably rounded.
I stumbled backward as all the oxygen left my lungs in a sudden rush.
She was pregnant.
We had been officially divorced for exactly two months, yet she was visibly carrying a child.
"I'm twenty-four weeks along, Ethan," she said softly, staring blankly at the sterile floor tiles.
That meant she was pregnant long before we even signed the final divorce papers.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I choked out, a toxic mix of anger and overwhelming guilt rushing into my veins.
"Because my heart is failing," she replied, finally lifting her head to meet my gaze.
"The doctors say my body cannot survive the physical strain of the third trimester."
I felt the entire room start to spin around me.
We had lost two pregnancies before, and the grief had destroyed our marriage.
Now, she was carrying our miracle baby, and it was literally killing her.
Before I could even process the horror of her words, a sharp voice interrupted us from the open doorway.
"You need to leave this room immediately, Ethan," the authoritative male voice demanded.
I spun around to see a tall, well-dressed man holding a thick stack of legal documents.
"Who the hell are you?" I demanded, instinctively balling my hands into tight fists.
The man adjusted his expensive glasses and stared at me with pure contempt.
"My name is David, and as of this morning, I am Sophie's legal medical proxy."
He walked further into the room and placed himself between me and my ex-wife.
"I am also the sole legal decision-maker for this unborn child," he added coldly.
I looked at Sophie, expecting her to scream or tell him to get out.
Instead, she just closed her eyes and turned her face away from me.
"Sophie, what is he talking about?" I pleaded, taking a desperate step forward.
David held up a signed document with a bright red notary stamp on the bottom.

"She signed her rights away to me yesterday, Ethan," he said with a cruel smirk.
"And my first order of business is permanently revoking your visitor privileges."
