Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Alliance

I gripped the armrests of my wheelchair tightly as Marcus loomed over me.
I had made a desperate promise to save my daughter's life, and now I had to pay the heartbreaking price.
Arthur walked down the hallway, flanked heavily by his elite Sterling security team.
"You are not taking that baby anywhere, Vance," Arthur declared, pulling a legal document from his pocket.
"I just purchased the entire debt portfolio of your largest criminal rival."
"If you try to take Sophia, I will financially arm your enemies and destroy your entire empire by tomorrow morning."
Marcus laughed a deep, menacing laugh that sent shivers down my spine.
"You think money scares me, Sterling?" Marcus challenged, resting his hand on his holstered weapon.
Before the situation could escalate into a violent war, an unfamiliar voice echoed from the end of the hallway.
"Put your weapons away, gentlemen."
A tall, elegant woman wearing a sharp gray business suit walked calmly toward our tense group.
She was flanked by several official federal marshals wearing tactical vests.
"I am Special Agent Davis with the Federal Bureau of Investigation," she announced.
She looked directly at Marcus Vance with a confident, unwavering expression.
"Mister Vance, we have just uncovered irrefutable evidence that Dominic Carter framed you for the massive offshore fraud."
"Dominic manipulated the fertility clinic to steal your genetic material specifically to blackmail you later."
Marcus's eyes widened in genuine surprise as he realized the depth of Dominic's treacherous plan.
"Dominic tried to pit the two most powerful families in the city against each other so he could steal the remains," Agent Davis explained.
Marcus slowly turned his gaze toward me, his hardened features softening for the very first time.
"He used my own unborn child as a weapon in a corporate war," Marcus whispered in absolute disgust.
The crime boss looked through the glass window of the intensive care unit at the sleeping baby.
He placed his large, tattooed hand gently against the cold glass.
"She deserves to grow up in the light, completely away from the darkness of my world," Marcus said softly.
He turned to face me and offered a small, respectful nod.
"You fought for her life like a true mother, Vivienne."
"Keep the child, and raise her with the love she truly deserves."
I burst into fresh tears of profound gratitude and thanked him from the bottom of my heart.
Marcus turned on his heel and walked away down the corridor, his mercenaries following closely behind him.
I thought the terrifying ordeal was finally over and we had achieved a peaceful resolution.
Suddenly, the hospital's emergency fire alarms began blaring with a deafening, piercing screech.

A frantic nurse ran out of the stairwell, screaming at the top of her lungs.
"Dominic escaped from police custody, and he just set the hospital's backup generator room on fire!"
