Chapter 4 - The Sudden Collapse

I backed away from my husband, my mind fracturing as the ultimate betrayal stared me in the face.

"Mark, what are you doing?" I screamed, grabbing the bedside lamp to defend myself.

"I am protecting our family, Sarah, just like I have done for the last eighteen years," he replied coldly.

Before he could take another step toward me, a deafening crash echoed from downstairs.

We both froze as the sound of breaking glass was followed by a horrifying, agonizing scream.

It was Leo.

Mark dropped the syringe instantly, his cruel demeanor vanishing as pure panic took over his face.

We both sprinted down the stairs and burst into the living room.

Leo and Max were both collapsed on the hardwood floor, convulsing violently.

Thick, dark blood was pouring from their noses and ears.

My mother was already kneeling beside them, her hands covered in their blood.

"It's happening, Mark, the genetic clock just ran out!" she screamed hysterically.

"Call the medical transport team now, we don't have a second to lose!" Mark yelled back.

I fell to my knees, desperately trying to hold my seizing children.

"What genetic clock, what is wrong with my babies?" I sobbed uncontrollably.

My mother looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

"They are dying, Sarah, and the only person who can save them is the son we stole from you."
