Chapter 2 - The Burner Phone

I instantly stepped back from the glass, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.
Who was that man, and why was my mother secretly meeting him during my sons' birthday party?
I hastily shoved the note and the blue blanket back into the gift box and hid it under my bed.
I needed to act completely normal, just like the note had instructed.
Taking a deep breath, I walked downstairs and out into the bright sunshine of the backyard.
My mother immediately approached me with a warm, perfectly practiced smile.
"Is everything alright, Sarah?" she asked smoothly.
"Everything is fine, I just needed a moment away from the noise," I lied easily.
She nodded and walked over to the patio table to cut the birthday cake.
I noticed she had carelessly left her large designer purse sitting on one of the empty lawn chairs.
Waiting until everyone was distracted by the twins blowing out their candles, I slipped my hand into her bag.
My fingers brushed against the thick manila envelope, but I also felt something else hidden at the bottom.
It was a cheap, plastic burner phone.
I quickly pulled the phone out and slipped it into my pocket just as she turned around.
Later that evening, after the guests had left and the house was quiet, I locked myself in the master bathroom.
I turned on the burner phone, praying it wouldn't ask for a passcode.

It opened immediately to a single, unread text message received just ten minutes ago.
The message read: "The subject has made contact, initiate the containment protocol before the mother finds out."
