Chapter 9 - The Burning Cabin

Mark slammed the brakes, and the security vehicle skidded to a halt in the deep snow.

We leaped out of the car and sprinted toward the blazing structure, the intense heat searing our faces.

"Lily!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, completely ignoring the thick, toxic smoke billowing from the roof.

I kicked the heavy wooden front door, and it splintered inward, releasing a terrifying wall of flames.

I covered my face with my winter coat and plunged directly into the burning living room.

Through the blinding smoke, I saw Chloe backed into the far corner of the kitchen, coughing violently.

She was holding my unconscious daughter tightly against her chest, her eyes wide with absolute panic.

"Give her to me!" I roared, stepping directly through a wall of burning debris.

Chloe looked at me, a sudden, tragic clarity breaking through her decades of brainwashing.

"He locked us in here," Chloe sobbed, clutching Lily as the ceiling groaned dangerously above them.

"Gary told me we were going to start a new life, but he just wanted to burn the evidence," she cried.

Gary had betrayed his own daughter once again, leaving her to die in the very place he had originally stolen her from.

I reached through the flames and grabbed Lily by the arms, pulling her heavy, unconscious body toward me.

Chloe did not fight me; instead, she helped push Lily out of the burning kitchen corner.

Mark burst through the back door holding a heavy fire extinguisher, spraying a temporary path through the inferno.

I carried Lily outside and collapsed into the freezing snow, gasping desperately for clean air.

Mark ran back to help Chloe, dragging her out just before the entire roof collapsed in a shower of brilliant sparks.

We huddled together in the snow, watching the horrible cabin burn completely to the ground.

I brushed the soot from Lily's face, crying tears of absolute joy when I felt her steady pulse.

The nightmare was finally over, and the truth had been completely dragged into the light.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic click echoed from the dark treeline directly behind us.

Gary stepped out from the shadows of the pine trees, aiming a heavy hunting rifle directly at my head.
