Chapter 4 - The Burner Device

I refused to believe that Mark was trying to kill me.
"This is a mistake," I told Detective Miller, shoving the printed transcripts back across the table.
"Mark ate the poisoned cinnamon roll this morning, why would he do that if he was in on it?" I argued.
Miller sighed and collected the papers, his expression remaining perfectly stoic.
"Thieves often fall out, Sarah, and maybe Mark decided he didn't want to go through with the plan today," Miller suggested.
I shook my head violently, knowing in my heart that my husband loved me and adored our daughter.
"Gary cloned Mark's phone, or he used a spoofing app to frame him," I insisted loudly.
The detective stood up and told me that Mark would be placed under police guard until he woke up.
I was entirely alone, and the police thought my dying husband was a criminal mastermind.
I realized that if I wanted to prove Mark's innocence, I had to find the evidence myself.
I left the hospital and drove back to our house, ducking under the yellow crime scene tape on the front porch.
The house was eerily silent and freezing cold because of the broken kitchen window.
I walked directly to Mark's home office and began tearing through his desk drawers.
I dumped files, old receipts, and office supplies onto the carpet in a frantic search for anything useful.
At the very back of his bottom filing cabinet, hidden inside an old cigar box, I found a cheap, prepaid burner phone.
My hands shook as I pressed the power button, praying the battery wasn't completely dead.
The screen illuminated with a bright white glow, showing a single missed call from an unknown number.
Before I could even check the call log, the burner phone began to vibrate violently in my hand.
I accepted the call and slowly lifted the cheap plastic speaker to my ear.

A woman's voice whispered from the other end of the line.
"Is the wife finally dead yet?" the woman asked with a cruel, mocking laugh.
