Chapter 10 - The Christmas Miracle

Gary's face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred as he stared down the barrel of the rifle.
"I am not going to spend the rest of my life in a concrete cell because of you," Gary snarled.
He moved his finger to the trigger, fully intending to execute my entire family in the snow.
Before he could fire, Chloe lunged violently upward from the ground and tackled him around the knees.
Gary fired a wild shot into the freezing night sky as he crashed backward into the heavy snowdrift.
Mark immediately jumped on top of his father, pinning the hunting rifle securely against the frozen ground.
The sound of blaring police sirens pierced the quiet forest as a dozen squad cars swarmed the burning property.
Officers swarmed the treeline with their weapons drawn, dragging Gary forcefully to his feet and slamming him into handcuffs.
Paramedics rushed toward us with thermal blankets and oxygen masks, gently taking Lily from my frozen arms.
I held Mark's hand tightly as we watched the police load Gary into the back of a heavily armored transport van.
Chloe was arrested, but the detectives assured us that her cooperation and severe brainwashing would result in a psychiatric facility rather than a prison.
Six months later, the terrifying memories of that Christmas morning had finally begun to fade.
Mark had completely recovered from the poisoning, and Lily was back to being a happy, healthy nine-year-old girl.
Gary was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, permanently removed from our beautiful lives.
We were safe, we were together, and the house finally felt like a warm, loving home again.
It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon, and I was cleaning out the old filing cabinets in Mark's home office.
I was throwing away years of junk mail when I found a sealed, yellowed envelope tucked beneath the bottom drawer.
There was no return address, but the beautiful, cursive handwriting on the front was unmistakable.

I ripped the envelope open and read the short letter written by Mark's mother twenty years ago.
"Gary didn't kidnap Chloe," the letter read. "I sold her to him to pay off my debts, and I am coming back for Mark next."
