Chapter 9 - The Serum

Sarah pushed the heavy titanium door open, keeping her weapon raised.
The laboratory was dark, illuminated only by the humming blue lights of the refrigeration units.
She stepped inside carefully, sweeping the room for any hidden threats.
The room was completely empty, silent except for the whir of the air conditioning.
She moved quickly to the central medical fridge, scanning the neat rows of glass vials.
She found exactly what she was looking for in the bottom tray.
A single glass syringe filled with a glowing, amber-colored liquid.
The label read "Project Lazarus - Antidote".
She snatched the syringe and secured it inside the padded pocket of her tactical vest.
She turned to leave, feeling a rare surge of hope.
Suddenly, the heavy vault door slammed shut behind her, the magnetic locks engaging with a loud thud.
The fluorescent lights in the laboratory flickered and blazed to life, blinding her.
A voice crackled through the intercom speaker on the ceiling.
It was a woman’s voice, smooth, corporate, and sickeningly calm.
The woman congratulated Sarah on making it this far into the facility.
She noted that Sarah’s combat skills were far too advanced for a suburban housewife.
Sarah aimed her gun at the security camera mounted in the corner of the room.
She demanded that they open the door or she would destroy millions of dollars worth of equipment.
The woman laughed, a dry, humorless sound.
She told Sarah that the equipment was completely irrelevant now that the hard drive was secured.
Sarah’s blood ran completely cold.
She realized with mounting horror what the woman was implying.
The woman cheerfully confirmed that their strike team had already raided the shipping container.
They had dealt with Elias and successfully retrieved the stuffed bear.
Sarah screamed, firing a burst of bullets into the security camera, shattering the lens.
She dropped to her knees, the crushing weight of her failure paralyzing her.

The intercom crackled one last time.
The woman gently informed Sarah that Madison was currently sitting in her office on the top floor.
