Chapter 5 - The Standoff

Sarah spun around, blinding the approaching figure with the flashlight beam.
A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped into the circle of light.
He was casually holding a suppressed pistol by his side.
Arthur gasped, his eyes widening in pure shock.
It was Marcus, Arthur’s older brother, who had delivered the eulogy just twenty minutes ago.
Marcus smiled, his eyes completely devoid of warmth or empathy.
He complimented Arthur on his clever little resurrection trick.
He explained that the medical examiner was supposed to extract the hard drive before the funeral.
But Arthur had brilliantly bypassed the morgue by paying off a corrupt funeral director.
Marcus slowly raised his gun, pointing it directly at Sarah’s chest.
He demanded the access code to the steel door so he could retrieve his niece.
Arthur stepped in front of Sarah, shielding her with his own weakened body.
He told Marcus that he would never let him touch Madison.
Marcus chuckled softly, a cruel sound that sent shivers down Sarah’s spine.
He reminded Arthur that the neurotoxin was still actively destroying his nervous system.
Without the antidote, Arthur would be completely paralyzed and dead within the hour.
Marcus pulled a small glass vial filled with blue liquid from his pocket.
He offered to trade the antidote for the hard drive inside the bear.
Sarah felt Arthur’s weight shifting, his legs finally beginning to give out.
She had to make a choice immediately.
She lowered the flashlight slightly, letting the shadows stretch across the tunnel.
Sarah reached into her burgundy shawl and pulled out a sleek, black combat knife.
She didn’t hesitate for a single second.
She threw the knife with deadly precision, burying it deep into Marcus’s shoulder.

Marcus screamed, dropping the gun and the glass vial in shock.
The vial hit the damp stone floor and shattered into a hundred pieces.
