Chapter 8 - The Father's Redemption

Marcus stood completely paralyzed as he watched his father take control of the chaotic shipping yard. The scuba divers attached heavy pneumatic lift bags to the submerged container, rapidly bringing it back to the stormy surface. “Get them out of there immediately!” Arthur yelled into his comms unit. The heavy metal doors were pried open with the loud squeal of bending steel. Marcus sprinted to the edge of the dock just as the operatives pulled Sarah and Lily out of the dark, freezing box. Sarah was coughing up seawater, clutching a terrified but breathing Lily tightly to her chest. Marcus collapsed to his knees, wrapping his arms around both of them and sobbing uncontrollably into the heavy rain. “I thought I lost you,” Marcus whispered, kissing his daughter’s cold forehead repeatedly. Arthur walked slowly over to them, his expensive cane tapping rhythmically against the wet pavement. “I was wrong about you, Sarah,” Arthur admitted, his voice surprisingly filled with genuine remorse. “When I realized Diana was planning a hostile takeover, I knew I needed to use her own trap against her.” “You used my daughter as bait?” Marcus yelled, standing up and furiously confronting his father. “I had eyes on them the entire time, Marcus,” Arthur replied calmly. “I needed Diana to fully commit to the theft so I could legally trigger the federal fail-safe in our banking system.” Arthur held up a small device that was currently broadcasting a live feed. “Diana just transferred those funds across international borders under severe duress,” Arthur explained. “Which instantly flagged her entire syndicate for international wire fraud and global terrorism.” Across the dock, Diana was screaming violently as Arthur’s elite operatives zip-tied her hands behind her back. Her billion-dollar empire was currently collapsing in real-time. “It’s finally over, son,” Arthur said softly, placing a wrinkled hand on Marcus’s wet shoulder. Marcus looked at the man who had caused him so much pain, realizing the complicated truth of his father's brutal methods. Sirens began wailing in the distance as the real federal authorities finally arrived to clean up the massive mess. Marcus turned back to Sarah, gently wiping the cold rain from her beautiful face. “Will you marry me?” Marcus asked right there on the wet wooden docks. Sarah smiled through her happy tears and nodded yes. But as they embraced, Lily tugged on Marcus’s wet sleeve once again. “Daddy,” the little girl whispered softly. “Where did my bunny go?” Marcus realized with a sickening jolt that the stuffed rabbit—the one containing Sarah's secret audio recordings—was completely gone. And Diana was suddenly smiling again as the police led her away.
