Chapter 10 - The Peaceful Promise

The heavy iron gates of the federal penitentiary slammed shut, locking Diana away for multiple consecutive life sentences. Marcus turned off the television in his living room, finally exhaling a deep breath he felt like he had been holding for months. The sun was shining brightly through the large glass windows of their beautiful new beachfront home in Malibu. Outside on the golden sand, Sarah was laughing warmly while helping Lily build a massive sandcastle. The nightmare was officially over, and the brutal corporate wars of the Ellison family had finally been put to rest. Marcus had formally resigned as the CEO of the company, transferring total control to a trusted board of independent directors. His father, Arthur, had surprisingly respected his decision and retired permanently to a quiet island estate. Marcus walked out onto the sunny deck, holding two glasses of freshly squeezed lemonade. He handed one to his beautiful bride, admiring the simple silver wedding band shining brightly on her left hand. “You look incredibly happy today,” Sarah smiled, leaning in to give him a gentle, loving kiss. “I have everything I could ever possibly want right here in this exact spot,” Marcus replied honestly. Lily ran up to them, her small hands completely covered in wet, sticky sand. Marcus scooped his beautiful daughter up into the air, spinning her around until the beach echoed with her joyful giggles. They spent the rest of the glorious afternoon playing in the warm ocean waves, entirely free from fear and danger. As evening approached, Marcus carried a very tired Lily up to her brightly decorated new bedroom. He gently tucked her beneath the warm blankets and kissed her softly on the forehead. Sarah stood in the doorway, smiling peacefully at the incredibly perfect family they had fought so hard to build. Marcus quietly closed the bedroom door and walked downstairs to lock the house for the night. As he reached the heavy oak front door, he noticed a sleek black envelope resting perfectly on the welcome mat. He picked it up, expecting it to be a late wedding congratulations card from an old friend. But as he pulled out the single photograph inside, his blood turned instantly to ice. It was a picture of Arthur, his father, lying completely motionless in a pool of blood on his island estate. Written on the back of the photograph in dark red ink was a single, terrifying sentence. “Your father paid for his sins, Marcus, and now it is your turn.”
