Chapter 1 - The Hidden Envelope

Nobody at Marcus Ellison’s engagement dinner paid attention when a three-year-old girl wandered out of the service corridor carrying an old stuffed rabbit. She was supposed to be with her mother, not standing beside one of the most powerful men in the room. Then Lily tugged Marcus’s sleeve and whispered something that silenced the entire table. “Look under the table, sir.” At first, everyone assumed it was innocent toddler curiosity. Then Lily pointed toward Diana’s chair, and Marcus noticed his fiancée quietly move her hand beneath the tablecloth. Diana had been smiling all evening. Suddenly, she wasn’t. When Marcus reached for the white linen, she stood up and said only two words. “Marcus, don’t.” Whatever Lily had noticed was still underneath. And Marcus was about to discover why Diana was terrified of him seeing it. He ignored his fiancée’s trembling voice and lifted the heavy fabric of the tablecloth. Taped to the underside of Diana's chair was a thick, yellow manila envelope. Marcus ripped it free, completely ignoring the shocked gasps of his wealthy guests. Diana lunged forward across the expensive china to grab it, but Marcus quickly stepped back. He tore the seal open with his thumb, pulling out a stack of pristine medical records. His eyes immediately locked onto a certified laboratory DNA test with the official state seal. Marcus scanned the complex scientific jargon, his heart pounding violently against his ribs as the undeniable truth finally clicked into place. The little girl holding the worn-out rabbit was not just a random toddler who had wandered in from the catering kitchens. Lily was his own biological daughter. But the absolute biggest shock was the name printed in bold black ink as the child's mother. It was Sarah Jenkins. Sarah was the beautiful woman Marcus had loved fiercely during his college years. She was also the woman who supposedly perished in a horrific car accident exactly four years ago. Before Marcus could even process this impossible reality, the heavy oak doors of the banquet hall slammed wide open. A waitress wearing a stained catering uniform stood in the doorway, her chest heaving with exhaustion. It was Sarah, very much alive. And she was pointing a suppressed pistol directly at Diana's head.
