Chapter 4 - The Eyes in the Walls
I remained perfectly still, letting my leg slide back down to feign total paralysis.
I whispered Sarah's name softly, waking her up without drawing attention to my sudden movement.
I asked her to lean in close, pretending to check my pulse.
Under my breath, I told her about the blinking red light hidden in the smoke detector.
She expertly hid her panic, continuing to adjust my blankets while looking exactly where I told her.
I needed to know who was watching me before they realized the doctor's neurotoxin was no longer in my system.
I ordered Sarah to go find Vance and tell him to meet me in the library, a room I knew was strictly swept for bugs weekly.
An hour later, I rolled my wheelchair into the massive library, finding Vance standing by the fireplace.
I told Vance about the camera, and his face hardened into a mask of pure professional fury.
He immediately pulled out a handheld frequency scanner and swept the room to ensure we were truly alone.
Once the room was clear, Vance hacked into the estate's internal security network using his master tablet.
He traced the hidden camera's IP address back to an offshore server.
The server was registered to a shell company owned by none other than my younger brother, Julian.
Julian had taken over the legitimate business side of my empire when I was confined to this chair.
He was the one who hired Dr. Aris.
He was the one who wanted me alive as a figurehead but powerless to stop him from stealing millions.
Vance looked at me and asked what our next move should be.
I told him we were going to pretend absolutely nothing had changed.
I was going to sit in this chair and smile while Julian walked right into my trap.
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors of the library swung open without a knock.
May you like
Julian walked into the room, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries I had never seen before.
He smiled warmly, looking down at my lifeless legs, and said it was time for a change in management.
