Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

We waited in suffocating silence for Richard to arrive.
Marcus stood rigidly beside me, his eyes locked on David's weapon.
My mother looked completely relaxed, as if she were waiting for a cup of tea.
Two minutes later, the front doorbell rang.
David kept his gun aimed at Marcus and ordered me to answer it.
I walked down the hallway and opened the heavy wooden door.
Richard stood on the porch in a tailored suit, holding a leather briefcase.
He offered me a polite, sickeningly fake smile.
I let him inside and we returned to the kitchen.
Richard unpacked a laptop and several official transfer documents.
He said he had already prepared the wire routing for the funds.
He confirmed that once I scanned my thumbprint, the money would become untraceable.
My mother thanked Richard for his excellent service to the real family.
Marcus asked Richard how much they were paying him to destroy us.
Richard laughed and said he was getting ten percent of the total settlement.
He told me to place my thumb on the biometric scanner connected to his laptop.
I looked at my mother and asked if she truly hated me this much.
She said she was only balancing the scales for the pain I caused her.
I reached my hand out toward the glowing green scanner.

Richard leaned in closer, his eyes practically gleaming with greed.
Instead of touching the scanner, I grabbed Richard's hot cup of coffee and threw it directly into David's face.
