Chapter 4 - The Man in the Window

The red laser dot hovered directly over Marcus's heart.

I followed the beam of light toward our backyard glass doors.

A tall man dressed entirely in black was standing on our patio.

He held a suppressed pistol aimed steadily through the glass.

My mother did not even flinch at the terrifying sight of the weapon.

She calmly took a sip of her water.

She told Marcus not to make any sudden movements.

Marcus slowly raised his hands to show he was not a threat.

The man tapped the glass twice with the heavy barrel of his gun.

He wanted us to open the door.

I looked at my mother and asked if this was the man from the Cleveland syndicate.

She nodded and said he was here to collect the debt.

I pressed the smart-home button on the counter to unlock the patio doors.

The man stepped into our kitchen, bringing a rush of cold air with him.

He lowered his weapon but kept his finger resting on the trigger.

He looked around my beautiful home with deep disgust.

He told my mother that her time was officially up.

She pointed at me and said I was going to transfer the funds immediately.

The man pulled down his black mask, revealing his face.

I gasped out loud.

May you like

He was not a stranger from a criminal syndicate.

He was Paige's husband, my brother-in-law, David.
