Chapter 7 - The Leap of Faith

The deafening wail of the security alarms echoed through the luxurious penthouse suite.

Nadia stood on the edge of the shattered window, the cold wind whipping her hair wildly around her face.

Borel raised his weapon, his finger tightening dangerously on the trigger.

"You have nowhere left to run, Nadia," the corrupt officer snarled over the overwhelming noise of the sirens.

Nadia looked down at the sheer drop, estimating the distance to the adjacent building's lower roof.

It was a seemingly impossible jump, but staying in this room meant certain death for both her and Leo.

"I will see you in hell, Borel," she shouted, before throwing herself out of the shattered window.

For a terrifying second, she was completely weightless, suspended in the freezing night air above the glowing city.

Gravity pulled her down violently, and she braced her body for a brutal, punishing impact.

She crashed hard onto the gravel roof of the neighboring building, rolling several times to absorb the momentum.

Agony flared through her left leg, but she forced herself to stand up and keep moving.

She limped toward the fire escape, her heart pounding with a mixture of terror and pure adrenaline.

She knew the Mayor's men would be swarming this building within minutes to finish the job.

Nadia needed to find the holding facility where Leo was being tortured before it was too late.

She remembered Borel mentioning a basement in his conversation with the Mayor earlier.

The only property the Mayor owned with a secure, off-the-books basement was an old meatpacking plant on the docks.

She stole a delivery motorcycle parked in a nearby alley and sped toward the industrial district.

The docks were eerily quiet, shrouded in a thick layer of ocean fog that smelled heavily of salt and rust.

She ditched the motorcycle and crept toward the looming silhouette of the abandoned meatpacking plant.

Armed guards patrolled the perimeter, carrying military-grade rifles and communicating through tactical headsets.

Nadia sneaked past a sleeping guard and slipped through a rusted ventilation shaft near the loading dock.

She crawled through the tight, dusty space until she heard the muffled sounds of a struggle below her.

Looking through the metal grate, she saw Leo tied to a heavy wooden chair in the center of a blood-stained room.

Detective Miller, with his arm wrapped in a makeshift splint, was standing over him with a vicious smirk.

Nadia kicked the grate open and dropped into the room, landing squarely on Miller's back.

She wrapped a piece of wire tightly around his neck, pulling him away from her bleeding brother.

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the basement slammed shut, locking them all inside.

A sinister laugh echoed through the room's intercom system.

"I knew you would figure out where he was, Nadia," the Mayor's voice mocked loudly from the speakers.
