Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Nadia stared at the deleted screen in absolute horror as the reality of the situation crashed over her.

Detective Miller, the man she had trusted with her life, was just another pawn in this corrupt game.

"Why would you do this, Miller?" she asked, keeping her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins.

Miller kept the gun leveled at her heart, his expression devoid of any guilt or hesitation.

"The Mayor pays a lot better than the city department, Nadia," he replied with a cold shrug.

"You just destroyed the only copy of that evidence," she lied, hoping to gauge his reaction.

Miller chuckled darkly, shaking his head as he stepped closer to her.

"Borel told me about the physical notebook you showed him at the checkpoint," he said.

"I need that notebook, and I need to know who else you shared this information with."

Nadia slowly raised her hands, calculating the distance between her body and the heavy iron poker she had dropped.

"The notebook is hidden somewhere you will never find it," she bluffed confidently.

Miller cocked the hammer of his pistol, a terrifying metallic click that echoed loudly in the small room.

"You are going to take me to it, or I am going to shoot you in the kneecaps," he threatened.

Nadia knew she had to create a distraction before he lost his patience.

She noticed a heavy mug of stale coffee sitting dangerously close to the edge of the desk.

With a sudden, explosive movement, she kicked the desk hard, sending the mug flying into Miller's chest.

The cold liquid splashed across his face, causing him to flinch and momentarily lower his weapon.

Nadia dove for the iron poker, grabbing the cold metal and swinging it wildly upward.

The heavy iron struck Miller's wrist with a sickening crunch, forcing him to drop the gun.

She did not wait for him to recover, delivering a swift kick to his stomach that sent him crashing to the floor.

Nadia snatched his fallen pistol and pointed it directly at his head.

"Get up slowly and walk to the closet," she commanded, her voice fierce and unwavering.

Miller groaned in pain, clutching his broken wrist as he stumbled into the small hallway closet.

She locked the door from the outside and braced a heavy wooden chair against the knob.

Nadia grabbed the original USB drive from the computer, thankful she had created a hidden partition that Miller had missed.

She rushed out the back door of the cabin, stealing Miller's unmarked police cruiser parked in the alley.

As she drove away, she turned on the police scanner mounted on the dashboard.
