Chapter 9 - The Ghost

I planned the entire funeral in a state of absolute numbness.
Chloe was released from the hospital a week later with a clean bill of health.
Rachel was granted full immunity for cooperating against Veronica's cartel connections.
We stood quietly in the rain at the cemetery and watched them lower the casket.
I hugged Chloe tightly and promised her we would start a brand new life.
As the crowd dispersed, a man in a dark trench coat approached me.
He flashed a federal badge and asked me to walk with him to his car.
I held Chloe's hand and followed the agent to a black sedan.
He opened the door and handed me a thick manila envelope.
He told me to open it and read the first page immediately.
It was a highly classified witness protection agreement.
I looked at the agent in absolute confusion.
He explained that Mark did not actually die on the operating table.
The FBI had intercepted the surgery and faked his death to protect him from the cartel's assassins.
Mark had agreed to surrender all the stolen millions and testify against the entire syndicate.
The only way to keep our family safe was to pretend he was dead until the trials were over.
The agent said a private jet was waiting at a secure military airstrip.
I started crying tears of sheer, overwhelming relief.
My husband was alive, and he had finally done the right thing.
We were driven to the airfield under heavy federal guard.
I walked up the steps of the private jet and stepped into the cabin.
Mark was sitting in the corner seat wearing a heavy medical brace.
He stood up slowly and pulled us into a desperate, crushing embrace.
He promised me that the lies, the greed, and the secrets were permanently buried.
We were going to disappear and become a normal family again.
The plane took off into the dark night sky.
May you like
I looked out the window and watched the city lights fade away into absolute nothingness.
We were finally free from the terror that had destroyed our home.
