Chapter 6 - The Garage

I grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall mount.
I dragged the unconscious officer into an empty supply closet and locked the door.
I knew I was walking into a deadly trap, but I had no other choice.
I took the elevator down to the concrete parking garage.
The flickering fluorescent lights cast long and terrifying shadows across the empty cars.
I walked slowly toward the center aisle with my hands empty.
A black SUV idled silently in the darkest corner of the bottom level.
The driver side door opened and Veronica stepped out.
Her signature red hair was tied back tightly.
She held a silenced pistol aimed directly at my chest.
She smiled a cold corporate smile and asked for the ledger.
I told her the ledger was hidden safely away and she would only get it when we were safe.
Veronica laughed and raised the weapon toward my face.
She explained that she did not actually need the ledger to survive.
She just needed to make sure Mark and I were dead so we could never testify.
She admitted she poisoned my family because Mark tried to blackmail her for the millions in the floorboard.
He was not a hero protecting his family.
He was a greedy thief trying to steal cartel money for himself.
Veronica pulled the hammer back on her pistol.
She said she was going to kill me and then go upstairs to finish my daughter.
I closed my eyes and braced for the fatal impact.
A massive engine roared to life behind me.
A stolen ambulance crashed through the concrete barrier at fifty miles per hour.
It slammed violently into the side of Veronica's black SUV.
The impact sent Veronica flying across the concrete floor.
Her gun clattered into the dark shadows.
The door of the wrecked ambulance kicked open.
Rachel stumbled out of the driver seat bleeding from her forehead.
She had escaped police custody and tracked my location using our shared family app.

She yelled at me to run while she grabbed a heavy crowbar from the ambulance floor.
But Veronica was already sitting up and pulling a secondary weapon from her ankle holster.
