Chapter 2 - The Interrogation

The interrogation room smelled like stale coffee and cheap industrial cleaner.

I sat in a metal chair for three hours while they ran my digital footprint.

Detective Miller finally walked back into the room holding a thick folder.

He tossed the folder onto the metal table with a heavy thud.

He admitted that their cyber team had traced the IP address of the email.

The message was sent from a burner phone connected to a coffee shop wifi three blocks from my house.

I was completely cleared of sending the assassination order.

I took a deep breath and asked if I could finally see my family.

The detective shook his head slowly.

He told me that Rachel had fully confessed to planting the drugs.

Rachel claimed an anonymous person paid her ten thousand dollars to slip heavy sedatives into my husband's coffee.

The anonymous buyer wanted my husband asleep so they could safely enter the house and steal his laptop.

I demanded to know why Chloe was unconscious if the drug was only in the coffee.

The detective looked down at his notes with a painful expression.

He explained that they just got the rapid toxicology report back from the hospital laboratory.

Rachel had indeed purchased standard sleeping pills off the street.

But that was not what was currently shutting down the organs of my husband and daughter.

The hospital found a lethal synthetic neurotoxin in their bloodstreams.

The sleeping pills were just a clever decoy to frame my sister.

Someone else had entered the house after Rachel left.

That third person had exposed them to a military grade chemical agent.

The detective leaned forward and asked me a terrifying question.

He wanted to know what my husband really did for a living.

I told him Mark was just a senior corporate accountant.

The detective slid a photograph across the table.

It was a picture of Mark's supposedly boring work laptop.

The computer was equipped with biometric locks and a satellite uplink module used by intelligence agencies.
