Chapter 3 - The Medical Cabinet

Clara tilted her head to the side and looked at the shattered remains of my cell phone on the concrete floor.

She calmly stated that I was becoming far too curious for my own good.

I backed away slowly, keeping my eyes locked on the heavy steel wrench in her hand.

I tried to play dumb, claiming I dropped the phone and she had just startled me.

Clara laughed a cold, emotionless laugh that sent sharp chills entirely down my spine.

She pointed to the purple chemical testing strip resting openly on my medical bag.

She knew exactly what I was doing, and the facade of our perfect marriage was officially over.

I demanded to know why she was intentionally poisoning her own innocent daughter.

Clara explained that Harper had a massive life insurance policy that paid out upon a tragic medical death.

She proudly confessed that she absolutely loved the lifestyle of a grieving, wealthy widow.

I realized she had married me simply because a trauma nurse husband made her look incredibly respectable.

I lunged forward to disarm her, but she swung the wrench aggressively at my head.

I ducked just in time, feeling the heavy metal graze the top of my hair.

I tackled her to the ground, pinning her arms down to prevent her from swinging again.

I screamed at her that she would spend the rest of her miserable life in federal prison.

Clara did not fight back, but instead began to smile even wider beneath me.

She calmly told me to look out the garage window toward the front driveway.

I briefly turned my head and saw a white van pulling up to our house.

The logo on the side of the van belonged to the state's child protective services agency.

Clara whispered that she had called them hours ago to report me for severe child abuse.

She claimed she had already planted my medical fingerprints on all the poison vials hidden in Harper's room.

Before I could react, Clara grabbed the wrench and smashed it violently into her own forehead.

Blood instantly poured down her face as she began screaming hysterically for help.
