Chapter 5 - The Inside Job

The breath left my lungs in a violent rush.
The person on the screen was a man impersonating the doctor who had just treated my family.
“Pause the video!” I shouted at Detective Vance.
He hit the spacebar, freezing the frame on the man's face.
He had sharp cheekbones, a scar above his left eyebrow, and cold, dead eyes.
“Who the hell is that?” Vance muttered, squinting at the screen.
“That is the person who poisoned my wife,” I said, my voice trembling with rage.
“He is wearing the ID badge of the emergency room doctor who treated Emily tonight.”
Vance immediately grabbed his radio.
“All units, we have a suspect impersonating medical staff at City General Hospital.”
“Lock down the pediatric ward immediately!”
He uncuffed me from the table, his demeanor completely changed.
“You are coming with me, Miller.”
We rushed out of the precinct and jumped into an unmarked police car.
The siren wailed as we sped through the rain-slicked streets.
My heart hammered against my ribs with every passing second.
If that man was at the hospital, Noah and Emily were sitting ducks.
My mother and sister had orchestrated this, but they had hired a professional.
Why would they go to such extreme lengths?
“Detective,” I said over the roar of the siren.
“My mother is deeply in debt.”
“If Emily and Noah die, and I go to prison, she inherits my life insurance and the house.”
Vance gripped the steering wheel tighter.
“That is a strong motive, but it doesn't explain the fake business trip.”
“They needed you out of the way for exactly four days,” he noted.
We skidded to a halt in front of the hospital emergency doors.
Police cruisers were already surrounding the building, their lights flashing in the dark.
We sprinted through the sliding glass doors into the lobby.
Chaos had erupted inside.
Nurses were screaming, and security guards were running toward the elevators.
Vance grabbed a passing guard by the shoulder.
“What is the situation?” Vance demanded.
The guard looked terrified, pointing a shaky finger toward the maternity ward.
“The fire alarm was pulled on the fourth floor.”
“Someone just walked out of the ICU carrying a newborn baby.”

I felt my entire world collapse in an instant.
Noah was gone.
