Chapter 2 - The Disappearance

I stared at the plastic evidence bag, unable to comprehend the words written in Emily’s handwriting.

“What does she mean, they made her do it?” I asked, my voice cracking.

The officer shook his head, his face an unreadable mask.

“That is what we need to find out, Mr. Miller.”

He explained that my mother and sister’s cars were gone.

Their clothes were gone.

Even the family photos on the living room wall had been stripped away.

They hadn’t just left; they had erased themselves from my home.

I walked over to the incubator where Noah was fighting for his life.

The rhythmic beeping of the machines was the only sound keeping me grounded.

His tiny fingers were curled into tight fists.

I placed my hand against the warm plastic, promising him that I would fix this.

Suddenly, Dr. Evans rushed back into the room holding a tablet.

“We got the toxicology results back for your wife,” she announced.

“The sedative in her system is a highly controlled substance called Lorazepam.”

I frowned, trying to make sense of the medical jargon.

“She doesn’t have a prescription for that,” I said.

“I know,” the doctor replied, her eyes narrowing.

“Because the bottle we found in her pocket has your name on it.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“My name?” I stammered.

“I have never taken Lorazepam in my life.”

The police officer stepped forward, pulling out a pair of handcuffs.

“Mr. Miller, I am going to need you to step away from the patients.”

Panic surged through my veins like ice water.

“You can’t be serious, you think I did this?” I yelled.

“My mother and sister were the ones at the house!”

The officer grabbed my arm, his grip like a vise.

“Your mother and sister just walked into the precinct ten minutes ago.”

May you like

He forced my arms behind my back.

“They are filing a police report against you for domestic violence and attempted murder.”
