Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

I looked into Emily’s terrified eyes and then at the tiny bassinet holding our son.

I could not lose them.

Slowly, I lowered my hand and tossed the hard drive onto the concrete floor.

It slid across the room, stopping at the feet of the man with the scar.

He smirked and bent down to pick it up.

That was the exact moment I pressed the small panic button on my phone inside my pocket.

Before the man could stand up, the warehouse skylights shattered inward.

Tactical flashbangs dropped from the ceiling, exploding with a blinding white light and deafening cracks.

“Police! Drop your weapons!” a voice boomed over a megaphone.

SWAT teams poured in from the loading docks, laser sights cutting through the smoke.

Detective Vance had tracked the GPS on my phone the entire time.

The man with the scar raised his gun blindly, but two shots rang out, dropping him to the floor.

The other armed men immediately threw their hands up, surrendering.

My mother shrieked in terror, trying to run toward the back exit.

Vance tackled her to the ground, slapping heavy iron cuffs on her wrists.

“Linda Miller, you are under arrest for kidnapping, attempted murder, and human trafficking,” Vance growled.

I sprinted through the smoke, falling to my knees beside Emily.

I ripped the gag from her mouth and untied her hands.

She collapsed into my arms, sobbing hysterically as I kissed her forehead.

“I’ve got you,” I whispered, tears streaming down my face.

“You are safe now.”

We scrambled over to the bassinet.

Noah was still breathing, his small chest rising steadily as paramedics rushed in to stabilize him.

The nightmare was finally over.

A week later, the sun shone brightly through the windows of our home.

Emily was resting on the couch, drinking warm tea while gently rocking a recovering Noah in her arms.

My mother and sister were locked away in federal prison, facing life sentences without parole.

I sat beside my wife, finally feeling the peace we had fought so hard to reclaim.

The house was warm, safe, and filled with love.

Suddenly, Emily’s old cell phone, which had been recovered from the evidence locker, buzzed on the coffee table.

I picked it up and opened the single unread text message from an untraceable number.

The message read: "Your mother failed, but the debt belongs to your bloodline now."

I looked out the living room window and saw a black SUV idling silently across the street.

The driver slowly lowered the window, revealing a man wearing a familiar hospital ID badge.

It was the real Dr. Evans.

And he was staring directly at our house.

The real hunt had just begun.
