Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the House

I stared at the tablet screen, my reality completely shattering.

“Fired?” I whispered.

“I was just on a business trip in Chicago for them!”

Detective Vance tapped the screen.

“According to their HR department, you were terminated for erratic behavior.”

“They have no record of sending you to Chicago.”

My breathing became shallow and rapid.

Someone had intercepted my emails.

Someone had faked the business trip to get me out of the house.

And they had hacked my company’s database to do it.

“I want my phone,” I demanded.

“I can prove I was at a conference, I have photos and emails!”

Vance reached into an evidence bag and handed me my phone.

I frantically unlocked it and opened my email app.

The inbox was completely empty.

My calendar was wiped clean.

Even my photo gallery had been erased.

“They wiped my phone remotely,” I said, looking up in horror.

Vance leaned back in his chair, folding his arms.

“It looks more like you deleted the evidence before returning home to finish the job.”

I slammed my chained hands onto the metal table.

“My son is dying in a hospital right now, and you are wasting time on me!”

Suddenly, another officer opened the interrogation room door.

He whispered something into Vance’s ear.

Vance’s expression shifted from smugness to confusion.

“What do you mean, you found a camera?” Vance asked the officer.

The officer nodded and placed a laptop on the table.

“We searched the Miller residence again and found a hidden nanny cam.”

“It was tucked inside a teddy bear in the baby’s room.”

I gasped, remembering the stuffed bear I had bought for Noah.

I didn’t put a camera in it.

Vance hit play on the video file.

The footage showed Emily lying in bed, sweating and tossing in agony.

Then, the bedroom door opened.

It wasn’t my mother or my sister who walked in.

It was a tall man wearing a medical mask, holding a syringe.

He walked over to Emily and injected the needle directly into her IV line.

Before he left, he pulled down his mask, revealing his face.

It was a stranger wearing the exact same ID badge as Dr. Evans.
