Chapter 5 - The Hidden Truth

The cold steel of the gun barrel pressed so hard against Tyler's forehead that a small red mark began to form.

Tyler squeezed his eyes shut tight, trembling uncontrollably as tears streamed rapidly down his pale face.

"Please do not hurt him, he has absolutely nothing to do with what happened in the past!" I screamed in desperation.

I tried to lunge forward off the velvet sofa to protect my son, but the tall man violently shoved me back down.

Julian kept his eyes locked intensely on mine, enjoying every single second of my absolute terror and helplessness.

"Oh, he has everything to do with this, Diane," Julian mocked me, a sinister smile creeping across his face.

Julian slowly lowered the weapon from Tyler's head and pointed it casually toward the family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

"Did you ever tell your precious boy where his college trust fund actually came from?" Julian asked with a wicked sneer.

Tyler opened his eyes, looking back and forth between me and the monster he had foolishly brought into our home.

I felt all the blood drain from my face, my deepest, darkest secret suddenly exposed to the harsh light of day.

"Mom, what is he talking about?" Tyler whimpered, his voice filled with a heartbreaking level of confusion.

I refused to look at my son, staring intensely at the floral pattern on the rug to avoid his betrayed gaze.

"Tell him the truth, Diane, or I will put a bullet in his kneecap right now," Julian threatened, cocking the hammer of the gun.

I took a shuddering breath, the weight of a twenty-year-old lie finally crushing my spirit entirely.

"The money we used to build this life was stolen from your father's illegal gambling operation before the fire," I confessed quietly.

I explained how my stepfather had hoarded millions of dollars in untraceable cash inside a hidden floorboard safe.

I had taken every single dime before striking the match, using the stolen money to vanish and give Tyler a completely clean life.

Tyler gasped out loud, realizing that his entire privileged upbringing was built entirely on a foundation of stolen criminal money.

Julian clapped his hands together slowly, mocking my painful, emotional confession with absolute cruelty.

"It is a very touching story, but now it is time for you to return my rightful inheritance," Julian demanded coldly.

He ordered the shorter man to bring my personal laptop from the home office down the hall.

The man quickly retrieved the silver computer and forcefully placed it onto my lap, aggressively unzipping my tied hands.

"Transfer all the remaining funds into the offshore account I am about to give you, or the boy dies," Julian ordered perfectly clearly.

I opened the laptop screen with shaking fingers, knowing that complying would only make us completely useless to him.

I typed in my master password, but instead of opening my banking portal, a very different screen popped up.

A bright red warning banner flashed across the screen in bold letters: "SILENT ALARM TRIGGERED - SWAT TEAM ARRIVING IN 30 SECONDS."
