Chapter 9 - The Final Betrayal

The sudden, eerie silence in the cockpit was far more terrifying than the deafening alarms had been.

"Tyler, what are you doing?" I screamed in sheer panic, staring at the deactivated fuel switches.

Without the engines, we were essentially flying a massive, heavy brick directly toward the earth.

Tyler did not answer me; his eyes were completely focused on a small, hidden radar screen near his left knee.

"They lied to us, Sarah," he finally whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and exhaustion.

"Who lied to us? The military?" I demanded, frantically reaching up to flip the heavy switches back on.

Tyler caught my wrist with surprising strength, stopping me from reigniting the massive engines.

"Valerie was not working for a cartel, Sarah, she is a rogue intelligence asset, and she stole something highly classified," he explained rapidly.

"The military base we are heading toward is not planning to rescue us; they are planning to erase all the evidence."

I stared at him in utter disbelief, my mind struggling to comprehend this massive conspiracy.

"If we land on that runway with the engines running, they will blow us out of the water the second we touch down under the guise of a failed hijacking," he said grimly.

"By cutting the fuel, I am forcing a dead-stick landing on the civilian highway just two miles short of the military perimeter."

He pointed weakly through the windshield, where a long, straight stretch of interstate highway was barely visible in the fading twilight.

"It is going to be rough, but there are too many civilian witnesses on the highway for them to cover up a missile strike," he reasoned.

I understood his desperate logic, but the sheer terror of landing a massive commercial jet on a public road was paralyzing.

"Tell the cabin to brace for a crash landing, right now," Tyler ordered, gripping the yoke tightly with his one good arm.

I grabbed the intercom microphone, my voice shaking violently as I spoke to the terrified passengers.

"Brace for impact, brace for impact, heads down, stay down!" I yelled over the speakers.

I strapped myself tightly into the co-pilot seat, pulling the heavy shoulder harnesses as tight as they would possibly go.

The highway rushed up to meet us rapidly, cars swerving wildly off the road as the massive shadow of our plane engulfed them.

"Hold on to me!" Tyler shouted as the landing gear violently clipped the top of a large overhead highway sign.

The metal shrieked in absolute agony as the heavy rear wheels slammed brutally onto the concrete pavement.

We bounced violently, the entire cabin shaking as if a massive earthquake had struck the aircraft.

Sparks flew in a brilliant shower outside the window as the front landing gear completely collapsed under the immense weight.

The nose of the plane scraped furiously along the highway, tearing up asphalt and throwing thick, blinding smoke into the air.

We skidded for what felt like an absolute eternity, the terrifying screech of tearing metal drowning out my own screams.

Finally, with one last violent lurch, the massive aircraft slammed into a heavy concrete barrier and ground to a complete, shuddering halt.

I unbuckled my harness frantically, my body bruised but miraculously completely intact.

Before I could even check on Tyler, the heavy cockpit door was ripped open from the outside, and armed men in black tactical gear poured heavily inside.
