Chapter 10 - Touchdown

The heavily armed tactical team immediately surrounded us, but they were not pointing their assault rifles at Tyler or me.

They dragged the unconscious co-pilot out into the aisle and quickly secured Valerie, who was screaming obscenities from the floor.

"Captain Tyler, we are the FBI Hostage Rescue Team," a tall agent in a bulletproof vest announced calmly.

"Your dead-stick maneuver on the highway gave us the jurisdiction to intercept before the rogue military faction could silence this flight."

I let out a massive, ugly sob of pure relief, collapsing entirely against Tyler's chest.

Paramedics rushed into the cramped cockpit moments later, quickly applying heavy pressure bandages to Tyler’s bleeding shoulder.

I left him in their capable hands and sprinted back into the chaotic, smoky economy cabin to find my son.

Mason was sitting perfectly safely in the arms of the elderly woman, looking absolutely terrified but completely unharmed.

"Mommy!" he cried out, launching his small body directly into my open arms.

I squeezed him so tightly I thought he might pop, burying my face in his messy hair and crying uncontrollably.

We were safely evacuated down the inflatable emergency slides, greeted by the flashing lights of dozens of police cruisers and ambulances.

The FBI agents took our official statements on the tarmac, confirming that Tyler was a complete hero who had been coerced into this nightmare.

The criminal syndicate involving Valerie and the rogue co-pilot was entirely dismantled that very night thanks to the evidence on the plane.

Tyler spent three days recovering in a civilian hospital, hailed constantly by the national media as the pilot who saved flight 442.

When he was finally discharged, we went straight back to our quiet, suburban home, eager to put the entire nightmare completely behind us.

The airline offered Tyler a generous, indefinite paid leave, and our stolen savings were fully restored by the federal government.

We were finally safe, completely whole, and more deeply in love than we had ever been before.

That night, I quietly tucked a sleeping Mason into his bed, feeling incredibly grateful that we had survived the absolute worst day of our lives.

I picked up his small backpack from the floor to wash it, but something heavy clunked loudly against the wooden floorboards.

Unzipping the hidden side pocket, I found a second burner phone I had never seen before in my life.

The dark screen suddenly lit up with a bright, incoming text message that read: "Your husband played his part perfectly, but the debt isn't settled yet."
