Chapter 8 - The Old Quarry

My truck tore through the rusted chain-link fence of the abandoned quarry.
The headlights swept across the desolate, rocky landscape.
I spotted Daniel’s luxury SUV parked near the edge of the massive, water-filled crater.
He was using the front bumper of his SUV to slowly push a beat-up sedan toward the cliff.
The rear tires of the sedan were already slipping over the edge.
I slammed the gas pedal to the floorboard.
My heavy farm truck roared like a dying beast.
I aimed my grill directly at the side of Daniel’s expensive vehicle.
Daniel turned his head toward the headlights just as I made impact.
The collision sounded like a bomb going off in the quiet quarry.
Metal crumpled, glass shattered, and the airbags deployed instantly in both vehicles.
The force of the crash pushed Daniel's SUV completely away from the sedan.
The sedan teetered dangerously on the edge of the cliff but finally settled on solid ground.
I kicked my jammed door open and stumbled out into the cold air.
My head was bleeding, and my ribs ached fiercely from the crash.
I reached into the bed of my truck and grabbed my baseball bat.
Daniel climbed out of the passenger side of his wrecked SUV.
He was furious, wiping blood from his perfect nose.
He reached into his waistband and pulled out a silver handgun.
He did not hesitate.
He aimed directly at my chest and pulled the trigger.
The gunshot echoed loudly off the stone walls of the quarry.
A blinding pain ripped through my left shoulder.
The impact spun me around, dropping me to my knees on the gravel.
Daniel laughed, walking slowly toward me with the gun raised.
"You old fool," Daniel mocked, aiming the barrel at my head.
"You ruined my car, you ruined my face, and for what?"
"She is going to die anyway."
I looked up at him, blood pouring down my arm.
"You forgot one thing, Daniel," I gasped out.
May you like
He paused, a look of genuine confusion crossing his arrogant face.
I gripped the wooden bat with my good hand and swung it upward with everything I had left.
