Chapter 10 - The Harvest

Dozens of armored police vehicles swarmed the quarry from every single direction.
Bright tactical lights blinded Warren and his hired mercenaries.
A voice boomed over a powerful megaphone, cutting through the noise of the helicopter.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation!" the voice commanded.
"Drop your weapons immediately or you will be fired upon!"
The mercenaries looked at the overwhelming number of federal agents and immediately threw their guns onto the rocks.
Warren screamed in absolute fury, refusing to lower his assault rifle.
A sniper shot rang out from the darkness, striking the rifle perfectly and shattering it in his hands.
Federal agents swarmed Warren, tackling him roughly to the gravel and slapping heavy cuffs on his wrists.
Other agents dragged the unconscious Daniel away toward a waiting ambulance.
A female agent ran up to us, throwing a warm blanket over Claire's shaking shoulders.
"Are you Samuel Reed?" she asked kindly.
I nodded, clutching my bleeding shoulder.
"Your daughter mailed a copy of the ledger to our field office yesterday morning," she explained.
"We have been building a case against the Voss family for years, and this was exactly what we needed."
I looked at Claire, realizing just how incredibly brave my little girl really was.
Paramedics rushed over, loading me onto a stretcher to treat the gunshot wound.
The Voss empire was completely dismantled overnight, their properties seized and their money frozen.
Warren and Daniel were locked in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of bail.
Six months later, life on the farm had returned to a beautiful, peaceful rhythm.
My shoulder had healed, the fences were mended, and Claire was smiling again.
We sat on the front porch together, watching the golden sun set over the hayfields.
I walked down to the mailbox to grab the evening post.
Inside the metal box was a thick, black envelope with no return address.
I opened it slowly and pulled out a fresh, clear photograph of my late wife.
The date stamped on the bottom right corner of the picture was from yesterday.

A small, handwritten note fell out of the envelope and landed on the dirt.
The note read: 'She didn't die in the crash, Samuel, and we want our money back.'
