Chapter 2 - The Hidden Truth

The red laser sights from the pistols painted bright dots on my flannel shirt.

Daniel stood up and brushed the dust off his silk robe.

His smug smile slowly returned to his bruised face.

"You really are a stupid dirt farmer," Daniel laughed.

"My family practically owns this entire county."

"We do not rely on local police for our personal security."

I looked at the three armed guards.

They were professionals.

They had their fingers perfectly disciplined on the triggers.

I slowly lowered the head of the baseball bat to the marble floor.

"Drop it," the largest guard commanded.

I let the wooden handle slip from my fingers.

The bat hit the ground with a heavy thud.

Daniel walked over and kicked the bat away into the hallway.

He leaned in close to my face.

"You made a fatal mistake coming here tonight," Daniel sneered.

"I beat Claire because she stole something from my father."

My blood turned to ice inside my veins.

"What did she take?" I asked softly.

"She took a digital ledger proving our real estate company launders money for the cartel," he whispered.

"My father already sent a cleanup crew to your farm to get it back."

Daniel smiled, expecting me to beg for my daughter's life.

He did not know I had spent three tours in the military before I ever bought a farm.

I kicked Daniel squarely in his shattered knee.

He screamed in agony and collapsed.

Before the guards could react, I grabbed the crystal pedestal and hurled it at the closest man.

The heavy stone hit him in the face, knocking him out instantly.

The second guard fired a wild shot that shattered a mirror behind me.

I dove across the marble floor and grabbed my bat.

I swung upward, catching the second guard directly under his chin.

The third guard hesitated for a fraction of a second.

That was all the time I needed to tackle him through the front window.

We crashed onto the lawn in a shower of broken glass.

I left him groaning on the grass and ran toward my truck.

My daughter was alone at the farm with an unconscious doctor.

A dark black SUV suddenly turned onto the street, blocking my only exit.
