Chapter 7 - The Blood Money

I stared through the glass at Mark, my brain completely refusing to process the betrayal.

My own husband, the man I had trusted with my life and my daughter, was driving the transport.

I pressed the blade slightly harder against Sarah's skin, demanding an explanation.

Mark sighed heavily and turned off the ambulance engine.

He told me he had lost his entire business six months ago and was buried in illegal gambling debts.

He said David had offered him enough money to pay off the dangerous people he owed.

All Mark had to do was make sure I never found out about Lily's true nature.

I felt a tear slip down my cheek as I realized my entire marriage was a lie.

I asked Mark what they were planning to do with Emma, who was still hiding at the hospital.

Mark looked down at his lap and said Emma was just collateral damage.

He confessed that David's men had already retrieved Emma from the supply closet.

He said both girls were being flown to a private research facility in Eastern Europe tonight.

A surge of pure, unadulterated rage completely replaced my heartbreak.

I shoved Sarah away, sending her crashing into the electronic monitors.

I kicked the back doors of the ambulance open and grabbed the unconscious Lily in my arms.

The cool night air hit my face as I jumped down onto the damp gravel road.

We were parked at the edge of a small, unlit private airstrip surrounded by dense woods.

A sleek silver jet sat on the tarmac, its engines already whining loudly.

Mark jumped out of the driver's seat and pulled a handgun from his jacket.

He aimed the weapon directly at my chest, his hands shaking slightly.

He begged me to put Lily back in the ambulance and walk away.

I looked at the man I once loved and spit on the ground.

A deafening roar suddenly echoed from the dark treeline surrounding the airstrip.
