Chapter 5 - The Bitter Truth

I stepped out from behind the concrete pillar and yelled Sarah's name.

My sister froze, her face turning perfectly pale under the flickering fluorescent lights.

The fake nurse immediately turned and bolted through the loading dock doors, disappearing into the night.

Sarah pulled Lily tightly against her chest, holding a small syringe in her free hand.

I slowly walked toward them, begging my sister to put the needle down.

I asked her what kind of monster experiments on their own child.

Sarah laughed, a dry and hysterical sound that echoed off the concrete walls.

She told me I had absolutely no idea how the real world operated.

She explained that Lily's biological father was not David.

Lily was the product of a highly classified genetic donor program.

The tracking chip was a requirement to ensure the corporation could monitor their investment.

Sarah confessed she was being paid a million dollars a year just to raise the child.

I stared at the woman I had grown up with, feeling absolutely sick to my stomach.

I told her I was going to the police with everything I knew.

Sarah shook her head sadly and raised the syringe.

She said the corporation owned the local police, the judges, and even the hospital board.

I lunged forward to grab Lily from her arms.

Before I could reach them, a heavy metal fire extinguisher crashed into the back of my skull.

My vision exploded into bright white sparks, and my knees buckled instantly.

I collapsed onto the cold concrete floor, my ears ringing violently.

I rolled over, fighting the terrible darkness creeping into the edges of my vision.

Standing above me, holding the dented red fire extinguisher, was David.

He smiled down at me and told Sarah to prepare the transport van.

The last thing I saw before I passed out was David reaching into his pocket.

He pulled out a thick roll of duct tape.
